Boiler Upgrade Scheme Eligibility Checker
Wondering if you qualify for the £7,500 grant toward a heat pump? Answer six quick questions and get a straight answer — eligible, not eligible, or possibly with caveats — plus exactly what to do next.
Important: The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a England & Wales grant and the figures below reflect our understanding as at July 2026, with funding confirmed to 2030 (Spending Review 2025). Rules can change — always confirm your eligibility on GOV.UK before committing to any work.
Who this is for
Homeowners weighing up a heat pump and installers who want a quick way to talk clients through eligibility for the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. Answer the questions above and get a straight verdict, with the reasons behind it, in seconds.
How much is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?
£7,500 toward an air source heat pump, £7,500 toward a ground source heat pump (including water source and shared ground loops), or £5,000 toward a biomass boiler for off-gas-grid properties in limited circumstances. Since 2026 there's also a £2,500 category for air-to-air heat pumps, and a temporary £9,000 uplift for off-gas-grid properties replacing oil or LPG heating with an air or ground source heat pump (running to 31 March 2027) — ask your installer if either applies to you. The scheme applies to properties in England and Wales, and following the 2025 Spending Review it's funded through to 2030.
Do I need insulation or a new EPC first?
No. The old requirement to clear any loft or cavity wall insulation recommendations on your EPC before applying was removed in May 2024, and since a further rule change in April 2026 an EPC isn't mandatory at all — installers can submit alternative evidence (like a recent utility bill or fuel receipt) if you don't have one. You don't need to sort insulation first to qualify. That said, decent insulation still helps a heat pump run efficiently and keeps your running costs down, so it's worth doing anyway.
How do I actually get the money?
You don't apply yourself — your MCS-certified installer applies for the grant on your behalf, to Ofgem, and deducts it from your quote. If an installer isn't MCS-certified, they can't apply for the grant, so always check certification before booking work.
Will a heat pump cost more to run than my gas boiler?
It depends on the system's efficiency, your current energy tariffs, and how well insulated your home is — there's no single answer. Try our Heat Pump vs Gas Boiler running-cost calculator to compare likely running costs for your own situation.
