How much will van finance cost me a month?

It depends on four things: how much you borrow (the price minus any deposit), the interest rate, the length of the term, and whether there are any fees or a balloon payment at the end. As a rough guide, a longer term lowers the monthly payment but pushes up the total interest you pay over the life of the deal. This tool gives you an indicative monthly figure for a standard amortising loan or hire purchase agreement — a real quote from a lender may differ once fees and their specific rate are applied.

What's the difference between a loan and hire purchase?

With an unsecured business loan you borrow the money, own the asset outright from day one, and repay the loan in fixed monthly instalments. With hire purchase (HP) the finance is secured against the asset itself — you hire it and only own it once the final payment (often plus a small option-to-purchase fee) is made. HP is usually easier to get for a van because the vehicle is the security, and there can be VAT and tax treatment differences for VAT-registered businesses. The monthly maths is similar, which is why this calculator works for both — but the ownership, deposit and end-of-term details differ, so check the agreement.

Is it better to buy a van outright or on finance?

Paying cash means no interest and the lowest total cost — but it drains a big chunk of working capital in one go. Finance costs more overall because of the interest, but it spreads the cost into predictable monthly payments and keeps your cash in the business, where it can cover materials, wages and the next job while you wait to get paid. For a lot of trades the cash-flow breathing room is worth more than the interest saved: an empty bank account is what actually kills small businesses, not a manageable monthly payment. Run the numbers both ways here, then weigh the total interest against what that lump of cash could earn or protect if it stayed in the business.

Does this tool store my details?

No. Everything you type stays in your browser — the numbers are never uploaded, saved or sent anywhere. There's no sign-up, no account and no data collection. Refresh the page and it's gone.

What else should I check before signing?

Whatever the monthly payment works out at, it needs to fit around the rest of your overheads — and around the point when replacing this asset comes up again. Our break-even calculator shows how many jobs a month cover your fixed costs including this repayment, and our tool & equipment depreciation calculator helps you budget for the asset's eventual replacement.

Please note: this tool gives a guide or estimate only. It may not be 100% accurate and is not professional advice — always check the figures before you rely on them. This is an estimate, not a finance quote. Real agreements vary with arrangement fees, balloon payments (on PCP), and flat-rate vs APR differences. VAT-registered businesses may see different VAT and tax treatment on hire purchase — check with your accountant and lender. Everything you type stays in your browser — nothing is uploaded, saved or sent anywhere.
