What Are Missed Calls Really Costing You?
You're up a ladder or under a sink, the phone rings out — and they call the next name on the list. See the real £/year damage, then grab 6 free text-back templates that win those jobs back in 30 seconds.
Missed-Call Cost Calculator
Widely reported industry estimate: home-service trades miss a large share of inbound calls — commonly cited figures range from roughly a quarter to well over half — most of it while they're on a job and can't pick up. Treat it as a general pattern, not a precise measurement of your business.
The 30-Second Fix
Set up a text-back auto-reply
You don't need an office, a receptionist, or new kit. Most phones — and every VoIP/mobile provider — can auto-text anyone who calls and doesn't get through:
- Android: built-in "auto reply to missed calls" in most phone dialer apps, or free apps like Auto SMS / Missed Call Assistant.
- iPhone: use a Focus mode with an auto-reply, or a call-forwarding/VoIP app (many are free) that texts back automatically.
- VoIP / business number: most providers (RingCentral, 3CX, even some SIM-only business tenants) have a missed-call-to-SMS setting — check your dashboard, it's usually a two-minute toggle.
Whichever route, the goal is the same: the second you miss a call, they get a text saying you saw it and you'll be straight back to them. That alone keeps most of them from ringing the next plumber.
6 Copy-Paste Text-Back Templates
Set one of these as your auto-reply, or fire them manually the moment you get a second. Edit the postcode/hours line to suit your patch. Free to read and copy — no sign-up.

Who this is for
Any trade that lives or dies on the phone: plumbers, electricians, builders, roofers, gardeners, cleaners, locksmiths, and anyone else whose customers ring first and ask questions later. If you're regularly on tools, up a ladder, or under a van when the phone goes, this is costing you money you can't see — until now.
Why do trades miss so many calls?
Because the job comes first. You can't answer the phone with wet hands, mid-way through a boiler strip-down, or while you're wiring a consumer unit — and rightly so. The problem isn't that you're bad at answering the phone, it's that nobody's covering it while you work. Many tradespeople who run solo or in small teams report missing a large chunk of their inbound calls — anecdotally and in industry surveys, somewhere between a quarter and two-thirds is commonly cited — and very few ever go back and count the cost.
Does a text-back actually work?
Yes — and it beats voicemail by a mile. Most people don't leave voicemails any more; they just hang up and dial the next number on Google. A text arrives instantly, it's non-intrusive, and it tells the caller two things they need to hear: you saw the call, and you're coming back to them. That's usually enough to stop them moving on to a competitor. It also gives you something to work from — a name, a job type, sometimes even a photo — before you've called them back.
What about an AI receptionist?
For busier trades, a text-back is the first step — an AI receptionist is the next one. It can answer the call properly, triage emergencies, book jobs straight into your diary, and never miss a call even during your busiest week. If your missed-call number above is eye-watering, that's usually the sign you've outgrown the DIY fix. BuildMeA builds these setups for Sussex trades alongside the websites and lead systems that feed them — worth a conversation if the maths above stings.
Please note: this tool gives a guide or estimate only. It may not be 100% accurate and is not professional advice — always check the figures before you rely on them. Figures are estimates based on the numbers you enter — treat them as a guide to the scale of the problem, not an exact audit. Anything you type here stays in your browser.
