Area to tile

Area is worked out as length × height. Tiling more than one wall? Add the areas together or use "Total area" mode.

Tile size & wastage

10% is the usual allowance for cuts and breakages. Add more (15–20%) for diagonal, herringbone or patterned layouts, and for large-format tiles where offcuts are less reusable.

Adhesive & grout rates

Adhesive coverage varies a lot with notch trowel size, tile size and how flat the substrate is — floors and large-format tiles need a deeper bed, so nudge the rate up. Grout use rises with wider joints and thicker tiles.

Every figure here is an estimate. Real coverage varies with tile size, notch trowel and substrate — always round up and keep a spare box of tiles for cuts and future repairs.

How many tiles do I need per m²?

It depends entirely on tile size. Tiles per m² is 1 divided by the tile's area in metres — so a 200 × 200 mm tile (0.2 × 0.2 = 0.04 m²) works out at 25 tiles per m², while a big 600 × 600 mm tile (0.36 m²) needs fewer than three per m². This calculator multiplies your area by the tiles-per-m² for the size you pick, adds your wastage allowance and rounds up to whole tiles so you're never left one short at the end of a row.

How much tile adhesive do I need?

As a starting point, allow around 4 kg of adhesive per m² for standard wall tiles and roughly 6 kg or more per m² for floors and large-format tiles, which need a deeper bed. A standard bag is 20 kg, so this tool divides your total kilos by 20 and rounds up to whole bags. The real figure swings with your notch trowel size and how flat the surface is — a wavy wall or back-buttering big tiles will always use more, so treat the estimate as a floor, not a ceiling.

How much wastage should I allow for tiling?

10% is the standard allowance and covers cuts, the odd breakage and a few spares for future repairs. Step up to 15–20% for diagonal, herringbone or patterned layouts where more tiles get cut, and for large-format tiles where offcuts are harder to reuse. It's cheaper to buy one extra box now than to chase a matching dye lot months later, so err on the generous side.

Tiling a floor that needs levelling first?

An uneven concrete sub-floor usually needs a sand-and-cement screed laid and cured before you tile on top of it. Our Screed Calculator works out the volume, sharp sand and cement for that stage.
