Turf Calculator
Ordering too little turf means a second delivery charge and a mismatched batch; ordering too much means money laid on the compost heap. Punch in your lawn size, add a bit for wastage, and get the roll count in seconds.
New topsoil bed at that depth needs about 0 m³ — roughly 0 bulk bags (≈0.6 m³ each).
Wastage adds 0 m² on top of your base lawn area. Round up — you can't lay a partial roll, and running short mid-job means a second delivery and a batch that may not match.
How much turf do I need?
Measure the length and width of your lawn in metres and multiply them for the base area, then add a wastage margin for the offcuts you'll trim around curves, paths and flower beds. This tool does both for you: it takes your measured area, adds your wastage percentage, then divides by the roll size and rounds up to whole rolls. For an irregular lawn, split it into rectangles, add the areas together and enter the total in "Total area" mode.
How much wastage should I allow for turf?
For a simple square or rectangular lawn, 5% is usually plenty. For a lawn with curved edges, borders, trees to cut around or an awkward shape, allow 8–10% — every curve means trimming a straight-edged roll and binning the offcut. It's better to have a roll spare than to run out with a strip left to lay, because turf is perishable and a second delivery may come from a different batch that doesn't quite match.
How much does a roll of turf cover?
A standard UK turf roll covers roughly 1 square metre — typically around 1.6m long by 0.6m wide. Sizes vary a little between suppliers, so this tool lets you edit the roll size if your supplier quotes something different. Turf is also sold by the square metre, so if you order by area rather than by the roll, the "turf area including wastage" figure is the number to give them.
Do I need topsoil under new turf?
If you're laying turf over an existing, reasonably level lawn or bare soil you're happy with, you may not need any. But over compacted ground, rubble-strewn soil or a levelled-off area, a new topsoil bed of 50–100mm gives the roots something decent to establish in. Enter a depth in the "new topsoil bed" field above for a quick bulk-bag estimate, or use our Topsoil, Compost, Mulch & Bark Calculator if you also want the weight in tonnes or a bag size other than the 0.6 m³ assumed here.
Does this tool store my details?
No. The turf calculator runs entirely in your browser — there's no sign-up, no download, and nothing you type is uploaded, saved or sent anywhere. Refresh the page and it's gone. All the figures it produces are estimates to help you plan and order; measure carefully and check quantities with your supplier before you buy.
Please note: this tool gives a guide or estimate only. It may not be 100% accurate and is not professional advice — always check the figures before you rely on them. Nothing you enter is uploaded — the calculation runs entirely in your browser.
