Skip Size Estimator
Order too small and you're paying for a second skip; order too big and you've wasted half the hire on fresh air. Tot up your waste by the bag or barrow load — or drop in a measurement — and get the smallest UK skip that swallows it, plus the weight warning nobody tells you about until collection day.
Heavy waste — soil, rubble and concrete — hits the skip's weight limit long before it looks full. For heavy loads, drop down a size or ask for a rubble-specific skip.
Every figure here is an estimate. Skip capacities, bag sizes and how tightly waste packs all vary — confirm the exact size, weight allowance and any permit with your skip-hire company before you book.
What size skip do I need?
Work out roughly how much waste you have, then pick the smallest skip that holds it with a little room to spare. As a rough guide: a 2–3 yd³ mini skip suits a small clear-out or bathroom rip-out, a 4 yd³ midi skip handles a small kitchen or garden project, a 6 yd³ builders skip is the workhorse for renovations, and 8 yd³-plus is for big bulky jobs. This tool converts your bags, barrow loads or measured volume into cubic yards, adds about 15% headroom so you're not cramming, and recommends the first standard UK size that fits.
How much can a builders skip hold?
A 6 yd³ builders skip is the most common domestic size and holds roughly 4.6 m³ — about 50 to 60 filled bin bags, or somewhere around 55 to 65 standard rubble sacks. It's the default choice for kitchen and bathroom refits or a decent garden clearance. That said, "holds" is about volume — if you're filling it with rubble or soil, you'll almost certainly reach the weight limit before you reach the top edge.
Can I overfill a skip?
No. Skips must be filled level with the top — never heaped above the sides. An overloaded skip is illegal to transport, unsafe on the road, and the hire company simply won't collect it until you remove the excess, which can hold up your whole job. The same applies to weight: go over the weight allowance and the lorry can't lift it safely, so it stays put. Fill heavy materials into a smaller skip, keep the load level, and load the heaviest waste at the bottom.
