Who this is for

Hairdressers and colourists, lash and brow technicians, and any salon or freelance therapist using products with a sensitising risk — hair colour, lash tint, lash lift, brow tint, brow lamination, henna brows and similar treatments. Build the record once on screen for free; print or save the take-away sheet when you need a signed copy on file.

How often do I need to re-test a regular client?

It's manufacturer-dependent, not a fixed legal interval. Most brands recommend re-testing every 6–12 months, after any break from the treatment, or whenever you switch product or brand. Check your specific product's instructions and your insurer's requirements — they take precedence over any general rule of thumb.

Is a patch test legally required?

Not by statute in the UK — but in practice it's non-negotiable. Your salon insurance policy will almost certainly require a documented patch test before these treatments, and the manufacturer's instructions are your main defence if a client has a reaction. Skip it, and you risk an invalid insurance claim as well as a preventable injury.

Digital vs paper records — which is better?

Either works, as long as you actually keep them. What matters is that the record exists, is dated, and is easy to retrieve if you need it. Under GDPR, store client records securely (locked cabinet for paper, access-controlled and backed-up for digital) and keep them for as long as your insurer's guidance recommends — check your policy documents for the specific retention period. Anything you type into this tool stays in your browser; nothing is sent to us.

Please note: this tool gives a guide or estimate only. It may not be 100% accurate and is not professional advice — always check the figures before you rely on them. Any document this tool produces is a template for convenience, not legal advice. You are responsible for making sure anything you issue meets your own legal obligations; seek professional advice for your situation. A completed patch test record supports your insurance position and shows due diligence, but it does not eliminate the risk of an allergic reaction or guarantee protection from a claim — a negative patch test cannot rule out a reaction on the day of treatment. Always follow your product manufacturer's instructions and your insurance policy — they override anything on this page. Client details you type here stay in your browser and are never uploaded to us.
