Tick every allergen present in each dish. Hover a column header for the full allergen name. Add a "may contain" note for cross-contamination risks — it prints as a footnote. Building and saving the matrix on screen is completely free.

Who this is for

Any café, pub, food truck, deli, caterer or restaurant serving loose food — anything not sold pre-packed with a printed ingredients label. If a customer can ask "what's in this?" across a counter or from a specials board, you need this information ready and accurate, not remembered. Every dish, drink and side you add is saved in your browser only — nothing is uploaded.

Which items need this?

Everything you serve. There's no minimum size or "it's just a garnish" exemption — the 14 regulated allergens must be declared for every dish, drink and side on your menu, whether it's a three-course roast or a flapjack by the till.

What about PPDS and Natasha's Law?

If you pre-pack food on-site for direct sale to customers (a sandwich made in the morning and put in the chiller, a wrapped traybake) — that's PPDS (Prepacked for Direct Sale). Since October 2021, PPDS items need a full ingredients list with the 14 allergens emphasised directly on the pack label, not just on a counter matrix. This tool covers loose/served food; PPDS items still need their own on-pack labels as well.

What if a supplier changes their ingredients?

Recheck the matrix. Recipe and supplier changes are the most common way allergen information goes out of date — a sauce reformulated to include mustard, a bread supplier switching flour blends. That's exactly why the printed matrix carries a compiled date: recheck it whenever anything changes, and reprint.

What are the penalties for getting it wrong?

Environmental Health can issue improvement notices, and serious or repeated failures can lead to prosecution and fines. But the real risk isn't paperwork — it's a customer's life. Anaphylaxis from mislabelled or misremembered allergen information is preventable. Keep this factual, accurate and current, not an afterthought.

Please note: this tool gives a guide or estimate only. It may not be 100% accurate and is not professional advice — always check the figures before you rely on them. Any document this tool produces is a template for convenience, not legal advice. You are responsible for making sure anything you issue meets your own legal obligations; seek professional advice for your situation. The accuracy of what you tick is entirely your responsibility — check ingredient lists and supplier data sheets, and always refer to current FSA allergen guidance. Your business name and every menu item you log stay in your browser; nothing you type here is uploaded or stored by us.
